Measurements are typical body measurements for each size across many brands, not garment measurements. Brands and fits (skinny, straight, curvy, mom, relaxed) vary, so always check the brand’s chart when you can.
Numeric sizes vs waist sizes
US numeric sizes (0, 2, 4…) and waist sizes (25, 26, 27…) are two different labelling systems. A waist size is meant to be close to your body’s waist in inches, while numeric sizes are simply steps in a size range. Roughly, size 0 ≈ W25, 2 ≈ 26, 4 ≈ 27, 6 ≈ 28, 8 ≈ 29 and 10 ≈ 30, then the steps widen. Many jeans also list a length, as in 28/30 (W28, L30).
How to measure
- Waist: measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part, above your belly button — keeping the tape snug but not tight.
- For low- and mid-rise jeans, also measure where the waistband will actually sit.
- Hips: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- Inseam: measure from the crotch seam to where you want the hem, or measure a pair of jeans that fits you well.
- Measure in underwear or thin clothing and keep the tape level.
Inseam lengths
| Length | Typical inseam | Usually suits height |
|---|---|---|
| Petite / short | 27–29 in | under about 5′4″ |
| Regular | 30–31 in | about 5′4″–5′8″ |
| Tall / long | 32–34 in | about 5′8″ and up |
Cropped and ankle styles are intentionally shorter; flares and bootcuts often look best a little longer, worn with heels.
Fit tips
- Stretch denim (1–3% elastane) gives and can feel half a size bigger after wearing.
- Rigid 100% cotton denim barely stretches; if between sizes, size up.
- For a curvy fit (smaller waist relative to hips), look for “curvy” cuts rather than sizing up and taking in the waist.
- High-rise jeans measure at your natural waist; low-rise sit on your hips.
- Wash jeans inside out in cold water to keep their shape and colour.
Worked example
Someone measures a 29-inch waist, 39-inch hips and a 30-inch inseam. Their waist matches a US 8 and their hips a US 10, so the size finder suggests the larger size, US 10 (about W29–30), UK 14 and EU 42, in a regular length. In stretchy skinny jeans, or in a curvy cut with extra room through the hips, a size 8 might also fit.
UK, EU and international sizes
UK women’s sizes run four above US numeric sizes (US 6 ≈ UK 10) and EU sizes are roughly US + 30 (US 6 ≈ EU 36–38, depending on brand). Some European brands use W/L sizes like US brands; others use EU dress sizes. Asian brands often run smaller — check the centimetre measurements.
